Excursions

The
Eastern Desert of Egypt; miles and miles
of unexplored
virgin mountains
and wadis.
This expanse of civilizations,
each leaving its imprints on
the land.
Desert trips from the Marsa Shagra Dive Village are offered as an optional extra to guests who wish to visit the mountains and wadis in the area by jeep or foot. They can be booked through Smiley Dive, but are paid for on site.
Karen Van Opstal is a Dutch geologist and keen astronomer as well as
one of the original dive pioneers with the Red Sea Diving Safari, in the
southern Egyptian Red Sea. She has lived in & studied the desert interior
for many years and speaks Arabic. She is a fascinating person to travel
into the interior with, not only because of her knowledge, but also for
her love and enthusiasm for this territory. She has her own camels and
vehicles for desert treks and is well equipped to handle longer expeditions
should they be requested.
Red Sea Desert Adventures are now offering you the opportunity of the
unique experience to visit the Eastern Desert.
We offer archeological tours to old emerald and gold mines, the ruins of villages and water stations along caravan routes, as well as nature tours to scenic places such as sheer granite cliffs, lunar landscapes to experience star studded night skies or the peacefulness of sunset in the desert.
Red Sea Desert Adventures is managed by Karen van Opstal and Thomas Krakhofer.
Karen, a geologist from the Netherlands has lived for more than 12 years
in the Eastern Desert and has gotten to know the land and its inhabitants
extensively. She speaks Dutch, English, French, German and Arabic. Thomas
is Austrian and has lifelong travel experience in Africa, South America
and Arab countries. Working together with Karen, he gained a thorough
knowledge of the Eastern Desert. He speaks German, English and Spanish.
The duration of the trips ranges from a long weekend to 2 weeks and can be done either by car, camel or hiking, starting from Marsa Alam, 270 km south of Hurghada on the Red Sea.
