  1. Introduction

The Real Name of Elphinstone Reef is Shaab Shagra but in the Diving World we know this reef as Elphinstone Reef and the word Shaab in Arabic means any kind or type of reef under the water. Shagra means the Blondy Person who has Red skin burned by the sun and this name was taken from the fishermen and the Bedouins who lived in this area for many years because on this area the mother nature give us only one red mountain and the colour and the sand of this mountain is Red otherwise the fishermen’s and the Bedouins combine the colour of the mountain to the Blondy person which is Red Cause the sun.

  2. History

The story of Elphinstone or Shaab Shagra appeared a long time ago when Admiral Elphinstone under orders from the Queen of England set out to discover and map  the Red Sea.  Having run into problems with poor sea conditions and a failing craft he found himself over a reef.  He hastily weighed anchor and waited for help to arrive.  Luckily for him a passing fishing boat came to his rescue, saving him and his crew from near starvation and death.  On return to England, he presented Her Majesty with his maps upon which he had named the reef upon which he was rescued with his name Elphinstone Reef.  The Queen enquired as to his reasons for doing so and his reply was that without this reef he would have surely died from lack of water and food.

When he returned back to England he put his name on the map as Elphinstone Reef and when the queen asked him why you put your name special on this reef he answered because without this reef I died because on the same day when my boat come over the reef I am run out of water and food even fuel so this reef saved my life otherwise the name of shaab Shagra is Elphinstone
