Snorkel & Swim at Dolphin House
Always dreamed of swimming with dolphins? Now it is your chance. Samadai
Reef, nicknamed the Dolphin House, is home to a pod of over 100 Spinner
Dolphins. Although a bit shyer than bottlenoses, these resident dolphins
will be happy to play with you for hours! Located a few hundred meters
off shore, south of Marsa Alam, it's an easy boat-trip away.
Dolphin House (Shab Samadai)
Not
to be confused with Dolphin Reef, which is another site further south.
Dolphin House is protected by government edict, and an environmental patrol
is in place each day to monitor boat and swimmer traffic. A group of several
dozen Spinner Dolphins have
made their home in this crescent shaped reef, which has a very wide and
shallow sandy protected cove. It is a popular dive and snorkelling site.
As luck would have it, the dolphins were out shopping when we came, and
only returned as we pulled up anchor to go home, but, the diving, and
the snorkelling was very good, nonetheless. We dived the South East Corner,
and the Pinnacles.
Information about Dolphin House
Also called Shab Samadai, this is a National Park open daily for diving
and snorkeling. There are 2-3 pleasing dives here. Also some fine swim-throughs
and caves. It's possible to see black and white Snappers, Big Eye Emperors
and Squirrel Fish.
There is now a designated zone for snorkeling only. Inside this area there
are no divers, zodiacs or boats allowed. Our divers usually have time in
the surface interval to do some snorkeling inside the zone, which borders
directly onto a "Dolphin Only" zone, an area strictly for the
2-3 pods of Spinner Dolphins. They come here with their young to rest and
sleep. As this whole area is now a National Park there are certain restrictions,
including the number of boats and people per day. There is also a Park
entry fee.
